    Summary

Retained surgical sponges eroding into the intestine are rare but can occur years after abdominal surgery. Imaging showing a barium-impregnated mass with polypoid defects suggests this complication, necessitating surgical removal.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Complications
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Retained surgical items are infrequent complications following abdominal surgery.
    • Delayed presentation of retained surgical sponges can occur months or years post-operation.

    Observation:

    • A distended bowel with a barium-impregnated mass and multiple polypoidal filling defects on imaging.
    • This radiographic appearance is observed in patients with a history of previous laparotomy.

    Findings:

    • The barium-impregnated mass represents an eroded retained surgical sponge within the intestinal tract.
    • The polypoidal filling defects are characteristic signs of this unusual surgical complication.

    Implications:

    • Physicians should consider retained surgical sponges in the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with these specific imaging findings after laparotomy.

  • Prompt surgical intervention is effective in managing this complication and improving patient outcomes.
