Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a comprehensive list of patient care components and workload modifiers for PED physicians.
  • To establish preliminary workload scores for these components using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX).
  • To form the basis of the Standardized Workload Assessment Metric for Pediatric Emergency Departments (SWAMPED).

  • An expert panel used a modified Delphi process to curate care components and modifiers.
  • Physicians completed a pilot NASA-TLX survey for each care component.
  • A virtual follow-up refined the final list of components and modifiers.

  • 46 care components and 6 modifiers were finalized.
  • High-acuity, low-occurrence procedures (e.g., cricothyroidotomy) had the highest median workload score (106).
  • Simple immobilization devices had the lowest median workload score (22).

  • Further validation studies are needed for widespread adoption of this quantitative metric.
