    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Social Science
    • Addiction Studies

    Background:

    • Stigma associated with substance use disorder (SUD) negatively impacts people who use drugs (PWUD), affecting their quality of life and healthcare engagement.
    • Negative perceptions of PWUD are unfounded and contribute to shame, hindering trust and full participation in care.
    • Experiential learning is a recognized method for fostering development and change.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the impact of an arts-based documentary and expert panel discussion on community members' perceptions of stigma towards PWUD.
    • To evaluate changes in perceived stigma using quantitative and qualitative measures.

    Main Methods:

    • Community members viewed an art-focused documentary on PWUD experiences, followed by an expert panel discussion.
    • The Perceived Stigma of Substance Abuse Scale was administered pre- and post-intervention.
    • Open-ended questions and thematic analysis were used to explore participants' reported changes.

    Main Results:

    • A statistically significant decrease in overall Perceived Stigma of Substance Abuse Scale scores was observed post-intervention (p > .0445).
    • Thematic analysis revealed participants reported recognition of stigma, cognitive and behavioral shifts, and acknowledged the film's impact.
    • Community benefits and positive changes in perception and behavior were identified.

    Conclusions:

    • An arts-based intervention, combining documentary viewing and expert discussion, effectively reduced perceived stigma related to substance use disorder.
    • Findings suggest this experiential learning approach can facilitate positive shifts in public perception and reduce stigma against PWUD.
    • The study highlights the potential for creative methodologies to address social determinants of health impacted by stigma.
