    Summary

Candidal chorioamnionitis, an intrauterine infection, shows varying fetal immune responses. Older fetuses develop giant cell responses and increased immunoglobulin production, indicating immune maturation against Candida.

    Area of Science:

    • Perinatology
    • Immunology
    • Fetal Development

    Background:

    • Candidal chorioamnionitis is an uncommon intrauterine infection.
    • The fetal immune system's response to this infection is not well understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the fetal immune response in cases of candidal chorioamnionitis at different gestational ages.
    • To correlate histological findings with the developing fetal immune system.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective histological analysis of fetal lung tissue from three cases of candidal chorioamnionitis (13, 16, and 22 weeks gestation).
    • Immunoperoxidase staining for immunoglobulins (IgM, IgA).
    • Preliminary studies using pan-T-cell antiserum.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • The 13-week case showed no inflammatory response but proliferating Candida.
    • The 16 and 22-week cases exhibited a giant cell response in airways and increased immunoglobulin-positive cells (predominantly IgM, with increasing IgA in the older case).
    • T-cell responses were minimal in the youngest case and controls but abundant in older infected cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Fetal immune responses to candidal chorioamnionitis mature with gestational age.
    • The findings provide insights into the ontogeny of human immunity in the context of intrauterine infections.
