This study reports the first adult case of an asymptomatic small-bowel juvenile polyp. It was detected by CT scan, located with capsule endoscopy, and removed via double-balloon endoscopy, preventing future complications.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Endoscopy
- Gastrointestinal Pathology
Background:
- Juvenile polyps are typically found in children and are rare in adults.
- Isolated small-bowel juvenile polyps are exceptionally uncommon in adult patients.
- Early detection and intervention are crucial for preventing potential complications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report the first case of an isolated adult small-bowel juvenile polyp.
- To highlight the diagnostic utility of advanced imaging and endoscopic techniques.
- To demonstrate successful endoscopic management of a rare gastrointestinal finding.
Main Methods:
- Computed tomography (CT) scan for initial detection.
- Capsule endoscopy for precise polyp localization.
- Double-balloon endoscopy for minimally invasive polyp resection.
Main Results:
- An asymptomatic juvenile polyp was identified in the small intestine of an adult patient.
- The polyp was successfully localized and completely removed using double-balloon endoscopy.
- No acute symptoms developed post-diagnosis and pre-intervention.
Conclusions:
- Adult small-bowel juvenile polyps, though rare, can be asymptomatic and detected incidentally.
- A combination of CT, capsule endoscopy, and double-balloon endoscopy is effective for diagnosis and management.
- Timely endoscopic resection can prevent symptomatic presentation and potential complications.
