Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of narcotic use among street children in Islamabad Capital Territory.
  • To identify demographic, social, and economic factors associated with narcotic use in this population.

  • An analytical cross-sectional survey was conducted with 443 male street children aged 12-18 years in Islamabad.
  • Data on substance use and associated factors were collected using self-reported measures.
  • Multivariate regression analysis was employed to determine independent predictors of narcotic use.

  • The prevalence of narcotic use (hashish, heroin, bhang) was 37% (164 children).
  • Commonly used substances included cigarettes (64.3%), naswaar (38.8%), and hashish (32.5%).
  • Factors independently associated with narcotic use included: age > 16 years, sleeping on streets, monthly income > Rs. 18,000, friends' drug use, and involvement in drug selling.

  • Specific risk factors such as age, living conditions, socioeconomic status, peer influence, and illicit activities are strongly linked to narcotic use.
  • Interventions should address these identified risk factors to mitigate substance abuse in this vulnerable group.
