National Nursing Organizations II01:30

National Nursing Organizations II

1.1K
Nursing organizations play a vital role in representing nurses working in specialized clinical settings, such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
The AACN emphasizes a healthy work environment through six standards to achieve an optimal patient outcome. The standards are appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, collaboration, authentic leadership, effective communication, and decision-making. In addition, AACN provides certification programs, webinars, journals, and...

The Professional Nurse01:22

The Professional Nurse

4.0K
Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:
Communication skills: These are critical characteristics, especially speaking and listening.

Nursing Ethical Principles II01:27

Nursing Ethical Principles II

902
Ethical principles are essential in guiding nurses to fulfill their responsibilities, focusing on the quality of nursing care and decision-making. These principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, shape the ethical framework within healthcare settings.
Consider the following scenario, which illustrates how these principles are applied in the care of Mr. John, a fifty-year-old teacher diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer.
Initially, Mr. John's...

An interdisciplinary team includes many healthcare professionals working together and utilizing their skills, knowledge, and expertise to provide holistic and quality patient care.
Physicians
The physician's primary responsibility is to diagnose illness and direct the medical or surgical treatment of the condition. The authority to admit patients to a healthcare agency or institution and practice care within that setting is granted to physicians by the healthcare agency or institution...

Nursing Code of Ethics01:29

Nursing Code of Ethics

2.1K
The Nursing Code of Ethics sets the ethical benchmark for the profession, and guides nurses in ethical analysis and decision making at the societal, organizational, and clinical levels. The code encompasses showing compassion and respect for the patient, their families, and communities in all circumstances while committing to providing patient-centered care. In addition, the code states that nurses must advocate for the patient by defending a cause or recommendation to protect their rights,...

    Area of Science:

    • Nursing Education
    • Interprofessional Education
    • Leadership Development

    Background:

    • Holistic healthcare delivery requires strong interprofessional (IP) leadership skills from nurse practitioners (NPs).
    • Existing disease-focused settings necessitate enhanced IP leadership competencies for NPs.
    • An evidence-informed IP leadership learning protocol (ILLP) was developed to build these skills.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and evaluate an IP leadership learning protocol (ILLP) for nurse practitioner (NP) students.
    • To assess the effectiveness of a virtual ILLP, including conflict resolution and patient-care video conferences (PCVC), in improving NP students' leadership skills.
    • To adapt the ILLP for both family NP and psychiatric mental health (PMH) NP students.

    Main Methods:

    • A flipped-classroom approach combined self-study of IP leadership strategies with a patient-care video conference (PCVC).
    • Students engaged in role-playing adversarial IP scenarios with faculty facilitation, practicing leadership during the PCVC.
    • The protocol was initially designed for family NP students and later adapted for PMH NP students.

    Main Results:

    • A significant improvement in leadership self-efficacy (LSE) scores was observed immediately post-intervention (p < .01).
    • Student evaluations indicated a positive perceived learning value from the virtual ILLP.
    • The adapted ILLP demonstrated effectiveness for both family and PMH NP students.

    Conclusions:

    • A well-designed virtual IP leadership learning protocol (ILLP) is effective in enhancing leadership self-efficacy (LSE) among NP students.
    • The virtual format offers a viable and effective method for delivering IP leadership training.
    • The ILLP contributes to strengthening holistic healthcare delivery by preparing NPs with essential leadership competencies.
