Abstract:
Japan, as a super-aged society, faces a growing number of surgical cases among elderly patients. The decline in physical and cognitive function is more pronounced in the elderly than in younger people, so it is important to choose the optimal treatment method for cancer treatment and to prevent the decline in physical and cognitive function after surgery. In addition, there is a focus on the use of advanced care planning(ACP)and electronic PRO(ePRO)assessments with the aim of improving quality of life. In this paper, we will outline the issues specific to elderly patients undergoing cancer surgery from the perspective of a gastroenterological surgeon, and report on our efforts in preoperative assessment, perioperative complication countermeasures, and quality of life assessment.
