A new coherence-based protection scheme accurately detects and classifies ten shunt faults on power transmission lines (TLs) within half a cycle. This method enhances grid reliability and is adaptable to smart grids.
Area of Science:
- Electrical Engineering
- Power Systems Protection
Background:
- Power transmission lines (TLs) are vital for reliable electricity delivery.
- Rapid and accurate fault detection and classification are crucial for power system stability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a novel coherence-based protection scheme for transmission line fault detection and classification.
- To introduce a new tripping characteristic model using coherence coefficients.
Main Methods:
- A coherence-based protection scheme was developed and tested.
- Current waves from the TL sending end were analyzed using six coherence coefficients.
- Simulations were conducted in ATP software, with analysis in MATLAB.
Main Results:
- The scheme successfully detected and classified all ten shunt faults within half a cycle.
- Protection security, sensitivity, and response speed were improved by adjusting settings.
- Performance was validated under various fault conditions (type, location, resistance, inception angle, power flow angle).
Conclusions:
- The proposed coherence-based scheme offers a fast, reliable, and accurate solution for transmission line protection.
- The technique is applicable to both conventional and smart grids, independent of system equipment specifications.

Attenuation
When constant series resistance and shunt conductance are present, voltage and current equations are modified. The propagation constant indicates that voltage and current waves consist of both forward and backward traveling components. These waves attenuate as they propagate, with the attenuation factor related to the resistance and conductance. In a...
