Blind Procedures

10.6K
Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

Traits, Mood, and Subjective Wellbeing

42
Subjective well-being (SWB) refers to an individual's self-evaluation of their overall life satisfaction, happiness, and fulfillment. This multifaceted construct is typically assessed by analyzing the balance of positive and negative emotions alongside perceptions of life satisfaction. Personality traits such as neuroticism and extraversion are strongly associated with variations in SWB, offering critical insights into the underlying mechanisms of emotional well-being.

Guidelines for Writing Outcome01:11

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

2.6K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Summary

Patients reporting higher happiness levels experienced greater satisfaction and well-being after breast reconstruction. Socioeconomic status also influenced these outcomes, highlighting the need for supportive interventions.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Psychosocial Health
  • Quality of Life Research

Background:

  • BREAST-Q assesses quality of life in breast reconstruction patients.
  • Patient psychosocial factors may influence BREAST-Q outcomes.
  • This study investigates the impact of positive affect and socioeconomic status (SES) on breast reconstruction outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if positive affect correlates with higher breast satisfaction and well-being.
  • To examine the influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on the relationship between positive affect and patient outcomes.
  • To identify factors influencing patient-reported outcomes in breast reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of breast reconstruction patients (August 2020 - October 2022).
  • Assessed happiness using the Cantril Ladder of Happiness (CLH) (1-10 scale).
  • Administered BREAST-Q preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively.

Main Results:

  • 'Happy' patients (CLH 6-10) reported higher satisfaction and psychosocial well-being at baseline and 3 months post-surgery.
  • 'Happy' patients also showed improved sexual well-being at 3 months and 1 year.
  • Higher CLH scores were significantly associated with better psychosocial (β=12.9, p<0.001) and sexual well-being (β=16.94, p<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Positive affect is linked to superior patient-reported outcomes in breast reconstruction.
  • Socioeconomic status plays a role in patient satisfaction and overall well-being post-reconstruction.
  • Further research is needed to develop interventions, like screening and early referral, to enhance outcomes.
