Summary

Computed tomography (CT) is crucial for diagnosing oral cancer bone invasion. This study found CT reliably predicts mandibular involvement, but invasion did not impact survival, suggesting conservative surgery may be suitable.

Background:

  • Computed tomography (CT) remains the primary imaging modality for assessing bone involvement in oral cancer due to its cost-effectiveness and availability.
  • Accurate staging of mandibular invasion is critical for treatment planning and prognosis in oral cancer patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reliability of computed tomography (CT) in predicting mandibular invasion in oral cancer patients.
  • To assess the impact of mandibular involvement on patient survival.
  • To determine the oncological safety of conservative mandibulectomy based on CT findings.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of oral cancer patients who underwent mandibulectomy between October 2018 and September 2020.
  • Calculation of sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of CT for detecting bone involvement.
  • Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were performed.

Main Results:

  • CT demonstrated a sensitivity of 77.9% and specificity of 76.7% in detecting mandibular bone involvement.
