    Summary

The risk of placenta previa increases significantly with each prior cesarean section. Multiple cesarean sections dramatically elevate the risk of placenta accreta in patients with placenta previa.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Maternal-Fetal Medicine

    Background:

    • Placenta previa and placenta accreta are serious obstetric complications.
    • Previous cesarean sections are a known risk factor for these conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the association between the number of prior cesarean sections and the incidence of placenta previa.
    • To assess the impact of prior cesarean sections on the risk of placenta accreta in patients with placenta previa.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of patient records from 1977 to 1983.
    • Inclusion criteria: patients presenting with placenta previa.
    • Data collected on previous cesarean sections, age, parity, and placenta accreta.

    Main Results:

    • The incidence of placenta previa increased linearly with the number of prior cesarean sections, from 0.26% (unscarred uterus) to 10% (≥4 prior sections).
    • The risk of placenta accreta in patients with placenta previa rose from 5% (unscarred uterus) to 67% (≥4 prior sections).
    • Advancing age and parity had a less pronounced effect compared to prior cesarean sections.

    Conclusions:

    • Increasing numbers of cesarean sections are strongly associated with a higher risk of developing placenta previa.
    • Prior cesarean sections significantly increase the risk of placenta accreta in women diagnosed with placenta previa, highlighting the need for careful management.
