Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the between-session reliability of various physical performance tests in elite adolescent ballet dancers.
  • To provide data for integrating strength testing into dancer training programs.
  • To inform high-performance settings on accurate measurement of physical changes.

Main Methods:

  • 25-54 pre-professional ballet dancers (9-30 males, 14-29 females) participated.
  • Six physical tests were conducted across 12 sessions, with retesting 7 days later.
  • Tests included isometric squats, plantarflexion, various jumps, and overhead press (males only).

Main Results:

  • No systematic bias was found between test trials (pairs sample t-tests).
  • Interclass correlation coefficients ranged from good to excellent (.89-.98).
  • Coefficients of variation were between 2.6% and 6.5%.

Conclusions:

  • Strength testing can be reliably integrated into physical performance batteries for adolescent ballet dancers.
  • Jump performance changes can be detected relatively quickly.
  • Maximal isometric strength tests may require longer observation periods (e.g., >6 weeks) to detect changes.
