Children in Southeast Asia prefer their mothers, especially when authoritative parenting is present. Maternal preference is linked to better prosocial behavior, highlighting mothers' key role in child development.
Area of Science:
- Developmental Psychology
- Attachment Theory
- Cross-Cultural Studies
Background:
- Attachment Theory posits a universal need to seek attachment figures during distress.
- Early caregiver interactions shape socioemotional development and future relationships.
- Understanding maternal preference is crucial for child socioemotional functioning.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate predictors of maternal preference in young children.
- To examine the link between maternal preference and child behavior.
- To explore the role of parenting style and time spent with mothers.
Main Methods:
- 185 Southeast Asian children (3-6 years) participated.
- Children's maternal preferences were assessed in hypothetical scenarios.
- Parenting style and time with mother were measured as predictors.
Main Results:
- Children expressed a preference for their mothers, irrespective of other caregivers.
- Authoritative parenting style significantly predicted maternal preference.
- Maternal preference correlated with increased child prosocial behavior.
Conclusions:
- Maternal preference is a significant factor in early childhood socioemotional development.
- Authoritative parenting positively influences a child's preference for their mother.
- Future research should further elucidate the maternal role in child development.

Authoritarian Parenting
This style is strict and controlling, with little room for open dialogue. Authoritarian parents demand obedience and often enforce rules with minimal warmth. Children raised this way may lack social skills and initiative, usually comparing themselves to others unfavorably.
