The development and study of the effectiveness of a childbirth learning aid

Background:
Childbirth skills constitute a vital component of nursing education. Nonetheless, third-year students may encounter challenges due to their limited exposure to maternity care, potentially leading to heightened apprehension during their initial real-world delivery encounters. Thus, developing an effective simulation model holds promise in augmenting and priming students with requisite learning skills and self-confidence before undertaking practical training sessions.
Objectives:
To develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a Childbirth Learning Aid to be used as an instructional tool for preparing students before practical training to enhance the normal childbirth skills, and self-confidence of nursing students.
Methods:
A two-phased research and development study was conducted at the Institute of Nursing, Thailand. Phase 1 involved collecting data through a literature review and five expert consultations. Subsequently, a prototype of a Childbirth Learning Aid was developed. The prototype underwent testing prior to a phase 2 evaluation of the Childbirth Learning Aid's effectiveness scores compared with traditional birthing devices' effectiveness scores.
Results:
Fifty year-three nursing students responded. A paired-sample t-test was applied to assess the relative effectiveness of the Childbirth Learning Aid in comparison to the traditional birthing device with significantly higher mean scores in every aspect including production, learning skills, self-confidence, satisfaction, and overall effectiveness with the Childbirth Learning Aid compared to the traditional birthing simulators (t = 11.67, p < .001; t = 7.70, p < .001; t = 8.88, p < .001; t = 14.02, p < .001; t = 10.50, p < .001, respectively).
Conclusions:
The Childbirth Learning Aid, designed based on simulation model principles for midwifery education, enhances nursing students' learning skills and self-confidence for childbirth procedures. Its integration into readiness preparation and teaching activities is recommended to improve students' abilities in normal childbirth.
