Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Rehabilitation Engineering
  • Biomechanics

Background:

  • Aging populations face increased risks of physical disabilities and mobility limitations.
  • Wearable robots (exoskeletons) offer potential solutions for healthcare cost reduction and home-based care.
  • This study focuses on the Bot Fit hip exoskeleton for older adults in residential care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the usability of the Bot Fit hip exoskeleton.
  • To examine the effects of Bot Fit on gait, physical function, and muscle strength in older adults.
  • To evaluate Bot Fit's role in task-specific physical activities and functional gait training.

Main Methods:

  • An uncontrolled study involving 32 older adults in residential care facilities.
  • Eight weeks of task-specific physical activities and functional gait training using Bot Fit (3 sessions/week).
  • Assessments included functional outcomes (10MWT, TUG, 6MWT, BBS, FSST, GDS-SF) and lower extremity muscle strength at baseline, mid-point, and post-intervention. Usability was evaluated via questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements observed in all functional assessments (10MWT, TUG, 6MWT, BBS, FSST) from baseline to post-intervention.
  • Muscle strength in hip, knee, and ankle joints significantly improved post-intervention.
  • Most participants reported positive feedback on Bot Fit usability.

Conclusions:

  • Task-specific training with Bot Fit enhances gait, physical function, and muscle strength in older adults.
  • Bot Fit is a viable tool for addressing age-related physical declines in residential care settings.
  • Findings provide insights for future robot-assisted exercise devices.
