Bullying02:04

Bullying

8.3K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Stereotype Content Model02:16

Stereotype Content Model

13.9K
The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) was first proposed by Susan Fiske and her colleagues (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; see also Fiske, 2012 and Fiske, 2017). The SCM specifies that when someone encounters a new group, they will stereotype them based on two metrics: warmth—or that group’s perceived intent, and how likely they are to provide help or inflict harm—and competence—or their ability to carry out that objective. Depending on the warmth-competence...

Comparing the Survival Analysis of Two or More Groups01:20

Comparing the Survival Analysis of Two or More Groups

107
Survival analysis is a cornerstone of medical research, used to evaluate the time until an event of interest occurs, such as death, disease recurrence, or recovery. Unlike standard statistical methods, survival analysis is particularly adept at handling censored data—instances where the event has not occurred for some participants by the end of the study or remains unobserved. To address these unique challenges, specialized techniques like the Kaplan-Meier estimator, log-rank test, and...

Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

23
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

89.7K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Bias in Epidemiological Studies01:29

Bias in Epidemiological Studies

112
Biases can arise at various stages of research, from study design and data collection to analysis and interpretation. Recognizing and addressing these biases is essential to ensure the validity and reliability of epidemiological findings.Broadly speaking, biases in epidemiology fall into three main categories: selection bias, information bias, and confounding. A more detailed description of possible biases is:

Summary

Bullying experiences differ between genders, impacting score validity. Latent class analysis revealed distinct bullying profiles, with boys more prone to general bullying and teasing, while girls experienced more relational bullying.

Area of Science:

  • Educational Psychology
  • Psychometrics
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Bullying is a significant social and health issue requiring accurate assessment.
  • Measurement artifacts can bias bullying victimization scores, compromising validity.
  • Gender differences in response processes to bullying scales may affect score interpretation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate validity evidence of response processes for the PISA 2018 Students' Experience of Being Bullied Scale.
  • To test measurement invariance across gender using latent class analysis (LCA).

Main Methods:

  • Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was used to examine response patterns in 11,599 Spanish high school students from PISA 2018.
  • Multigroup LCA analyzed measurement invariance across gender.
  • Multinomial logistic regression examined gender differences in latent classes.

Main Results:

  • Four distinct bullying profiles were identified: Not Bullied, Bullied (All Types), Relational Bullying, and Potential Friendly Teasing.
  • Boys were more likely to be in the 'Bullied (All Types)' and 'Potential Friendly Teasing' classes.
  • Girls were more likely to be in the 'Relational Bullying' class.

Conclusions:

  • LCA provides validity evidence for response processes in bullying assessments.
  • Gender differences in bullying experiences may compromise the fairness and validity of comparative score interpretations.
  • Addressing these differences is crucial for developing unbiased classroom interventions.
