Summary

The Reading Accessibility Index (ACC) and mean reading speed of the 3 fastest sentences (RS2) better capture vision changes in geographic atrophy (GA) than other measures. These methods are recommended for future clinical trials evaluating GA progression.

Background:

  • Current reading speed measures may vary in their sensitivity to detect subtle functional declines in GA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of four different reading speed measures in capturing longitudinal visual function changes in individuals with GA.
  • To identify the most reliable reading speed metrics for use in clinical trials and research studies involving GA.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from two Phase III clinical trials (Chroma and Spectri) involving 940 participants with bilateral GA.
  • Monocular reading speed was assessed using the Minnesota Low-Vision Reading Test (MNRead).

  • While reading speed declines progressively in GA, its correlation with GA growth is weak.
