Summary

Binge eating disorder (BED) affects 9.5% of obese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Denmark, a higher prevalence than in the general population. This suggests BED screening may benefit T2D patients.

Background:

  • Binge eating disorder (BED) is a recognized diagnosis in Denmark.
  • The general population prevalence of BED in Denmark is 2-3%.
  • BED prevalence in Danish type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients is unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the prevalence of BED in obese patients with T2D in Denmark.
  • To explore clinical differences between T2D patients with and without BED.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 84 obese T2D patients (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) was recruited.
  • Patients were screened for BED using the Binge Eating Disorder Questionnaire.
  • Clinical data were collected and analyzed using statistical comparisons.

Main Results:

  • 9.5% of obese T2D patients showed indication of BED.
  • An additional 8.3% exhibited subthreshold BED symptoms.
  • Patients with BED were younger, had earlier diabetes onset, and higher BMI.

Conclusions:

  • Obese T2D patients exhibit a higher prevalence of BED than the general population.
  • Systematic BED screening may be beneficial for obese T2D patients.
  • Further research is required to understand the BED-T2D association fully.
