Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Autistic individuals face healthcare access barriers.
Autistic clinical professionals can improve healthcare access.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore challenges faced by Autistic clinical professionals in healthcare settings.
To identify needed, received, and missing reasonable adjustments for Autistic clinicians.
To inform strategies for creating equitable healthcare workplaces.

Main Methods:

Qualitative study design.
Online survey distributed via social media to 82 Autistic clinical professionals.
Quasi-thematic analysis combined with content analysis principles.

Main Results:

Eight key themes of challenges were identified: employment, "under the radar" adjustments, social/professional integration, executive functioning, change, environment, practices/cultures, and consequences.
Communication mismatches and social/professional fitting-in were significant integration challenges.
Respondents reported needing, having, or lacking specific reasonable adjustments.

Conclusions:

Individualized and iterative discussions between Autistic clinicians and employers are crucial for identifying effective reasonable adjustments.
Implementing tailored reasonable adjustments can foster equitable workplaces.
Equitable workplaces benefit Autistic professionals, patients, and the overall healthcare system.
