    Background:

    • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) vascular prostheses are used for femoro-popliteal bypass surgery.
    • Helically reinforced PTFE prostheses were implanted in two patients for below-knee bypass.
    • Early postoperative thrombosis occurred in both cases, necessitating investigation.

    Observation:

    • Postoperative angiography revealed mild, stenosis-like kinking in one prosthesis with knee flexion.
    • Intraoperative examination during reoperation showed longitudinal axis kinking of the other prosthesis.

    Findings:

    • Kinking of femoro-popliteal prostheses in the early postoperative period can lead to thrombosis.
    • The design or placement of helically reinforced PTFE prostheses may predispose them to kinking across the knee joint.
