Adverse health shocks prompt immediate behavior changes like healthier eating and less smoking, but these effects rarely last beyond two years. Mental health shocks show weaker, varied impacts on health behaviors.
Area of Science:
- Health Economics
- Behavioral Economics
- Public Health
Background:
- Existing research indicates health-related behaviors improve following adverse physical health shocks.
- Limited evidence exists on the long-term persistence of these behavioral changes.
- The impact of mental health shocks on health behaviors remains under-explored.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the duration of health behavior changes after physical health shocks.
- To examine whether mental health shocks elicit similar behavioral responses compared to physical health shocks.
- To analyze health behavior adjustments up to fifteen years post-shock.
Main Methods:
- Utilized individual-level survey data from Germany.
- Employed regression augmented inverse-probability weighting (RAIPW).
- Incorporated machine learning prediction algorithms for comparative analysis.
Main Results:
- Physical health shocks led to immediate improvements in healthy eating and reduced smoking.
- Sports participation decreased following physical health shocks.
- Mental health shocks had a weaker immediate impact, except for increased smoking.
- Significant behavioral differences were seldom observed beyond two years post-shock.
Conclusions:
- Health behavior responses to adverse shocks are generally short-lived, rarely persisting beyond two years.
- Mental health shocks have a less pronounced effect on health behaviors compared to physical health shocks.
- Public health interventions may need to consider the transient nature of shock-induced behavioral changes.
