  • 36 ICU nurses participated in the study in Qazvin City, Iran.
  • Cognitive function (attention, working memory) was assessed using the Stroop Test and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale.
  • Data were analyzed using descriptive and mixed-effects models, with a significance level of p < 0.05.

Main Results:

  • Most nurses (83.3%) showed inflexible circadian rhythms.
  • Cognitive performance, including attention and working memory, was highest during morning shifts.
  • Increased circadian rhythm stability and amplitude correlated with reduced memory span and slower response times during evening and night shifts.

Conclusions:

  • Circadian rhythm disruptions significantly diminish cognitive performance in nurses during evening and night shifts.
  • This decline in cognitive function may increase the likelihood of medical errors.
  • Rhythm stability and amplitude can potentially predict and mitigate risks associated with shift work in healthcare.
