    Summary

Psychoanalytic treatment for childhood ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) showed comparable long-term effectiveness to behavioral therapy with medication (BT/M). This 12-year follow-up suggests no worse outcomes for children treated with psychoanalysis alone.

    • Psychotherapy Research
    • Longitudinal Studies

    Context:

    • Current ADHD treatment guidelines favor behavioral therapy with medication (BT/M).
    • The Frankfurt ADHD Effectiveness Study investigates alternative long-term treatments.
    • This study compares psychoanalytic treatment without medication (PSA) to standard BT/M.

    Purpose:

    • To assess the long-term effectiveness of psychoanalytic treatment (PSA) versus BT/M for ADHD and/or ODD in children.
    • To describe the sample 12 years after the initiation of treatment.
    • To evaluate diagnostic criteria, externalizing, and internalizing problems in young adulthood.

    Summary:

    • A 12-year follow-up examined 19 young adults (average age 19) who received either PSA or BT/M in childhood.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • At follow-up, few participants met diagnostic criteria for ADHD or ODD; only one showed externalizing problems.
  • Residual internalizing problems were noted, with slightly more in the BT/M group.
  • Impact:

    • Findings suggest that psychoanalytic treatment without medication may be a viable long-term option for childhood ADHD/ODD.
    • Psychoanalytic treatment did not yield worse outcomes compared to BT/M at 12-year follow-up.
    • This descriptive study provides valuable insights into the long-term trajectory of treated childhood disruptive disorders.
