Background:

  • Transgender, gender diverse, and nonbinary (TGDNB) individuals encounter barriers accessing allied health services, including discrimination and stigma.
  • Limited understanding exists regarding the features of allied health care encounters for TGDNB individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize evidence on allied health care encounters with TGDNB individuals.
  • To identify clinical practice guidance for allied health professionals serving TGDNB populations.
  • To outline recommendations for enhancing allied health care for TGDNB individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive scoping review was conducted, searching four electronic databases and two grey literature sources from 2000 to 2021.
  • Data from 35 included articles were extracted and narratively summarized.
  • Recommendations were synthesized and presented in a table.

Main Results:

  • Barriers included negative past experiences, lack of clinician competence, financial issues, travel, and fear of stigma.
  • No specific clinical guidelines for allied health professionals were identified.
  • Eight key recommendations emerged, focusing on TGDNB-specific resources, clinician education, pronoun usage, inclusive environments, and reduced stigma.

Conclusions:

  • Improvements in allied health care for TGDNB individuals are needed and achievable.
  • Further patient-centered research is essential to enhance TGDNB health care experiences.
