Laser Ablation and Intravital Microscopy to Study Intestinal Remodeling09:42

Laser Ablation and Intravital Microscopy to Study Intestinal Remodeling

2.0K
Here, we present a method to obtain images of the intestine upon laser-induced wounding. By exposing the mouse intestine to a multiphoton laser, the loss of a single or multiple crypt(s) is induced locally. By repeatedly imaging the damaged area over months, the real-time dynamics of intestinal recovery is...

Focal Laser Ablation of Prostate Cancer: An Office Procedure

8.4K
This article presents and describes an outpatient treatment for prostate cancer using focal laser ablation. Laser catheter placement is guided by MRI-ultrasound fusion imaging in a fashion similar to prostate needle biopsy. Treatment is monitored in real-time with a thermal probe, placed adjacent to the laser fiber.

In vivo Laser Axotomy in C. elegans

18.9K
A protocol to cut neurons in C. elegans with a MicroPoint pulsed laser is presented. We describe setting up the system, immobilizing worms, and severing labeled neurons. Advantages include a relatively low-cost system and the ability to sever neuronal processes or ablate cells in...

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Chemistry
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are promising materials for carbon-neutral applications due to their stability and porosity.
  • Limited discovery of ZIFs is attributed to a gap between predicted and synthesized network topologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a data-driven algorithm for identifying novel ZIF topologies.
  • To overcome limitations in ZIF discovery by bridging predicted and synthesized structures.

Main Methods:

  • A data-driven search algorithm was employed, utilizing structural descriptors from known zeolite materials.
  • Over 4 million zeolite structures were screened using parameters like O-T-O angle differences and vertex symbols.
  • Energy calculations were performed to rank potential ZIF candidates based on synthesizability.

Main Results:

  • The algorithm identified potential ZIF candidates from a large database of zeolite structures.
  • Three new ZIFs, UZIF-31, UZIF-32, and UZIF-33, were successfully synthesized, featuring two novel topologies (uft1 and uft2).
  • UZIF-33 demonstrated significant selective adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully combined computational predictions with chemical intuition to discover new ZIF materials.
  • The developed data-driven approach accelerates the discovery of ZIFs with potential for carbon capture and other applications.
  • The novel UZIF structures, particularly UZIF-33, show promise for advancing carbon-neutral technologies.
