Tissues01:18

Tissues

Cells with similar structure and function are grouped into tissues. A group of tissues with a specialized function is called an organ. There are four main types of tissue in vertebrates: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous.
Adult Stem Cells01:33

Adult Stem Cells

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that divide and produce more stem cells or progenitor cells that differentiate into mature, specialized cell types. All the cells in the body are generated from stem cells in the early embryo, but small populations of stem cells are also present in many adult tissues including the bone marrow, brain, skin, and gut. These adult stem cells typically produce the various cell types found in that tissue—to replace cells that are damaged or to continuously renew...
Anatomy of the Intestines01:23

Anatomy of the Intestines

Although digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids may begin in the stomach, it is completed in the intestine. The absorption of nutrients, water, and electrolytes from food and drink also occurs in the intestine. The intestines can be divided into two structurally distinct organs—the small and large intestines.
Small Intestines
The small intestine is an ~7 meter-long tube with an inner diameter of just 2.5 cm. Since most nutrients are absorbed here, the inner lining of the small...
Bone Remodeling01:40

Bone Remodeling

Bone remodeling is a continuous and balanced process of bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. In adults, it helps maintain bone mass and calcium homeostasis. While mechanical stress can stimulate turnover as part of the normal maintenance and reparative process, several hormones also regulate bone remodeling.
Skeletal Muscle Anatomy00:55

Skeletal Muscle Anatomy

Skeletal muscle is the most abundant type of muscle in the body. Tendons are the connective tissue that attaches skeletal muscle to bones. Skeletal muscles pull on tendons, which in turn pull on bones to carry out voluntary movements.
Anatomy of the Heart01:27

Anatomy of the Heart

The human heart is made up of three layers of tissue that are surrounded by the pericardium, a membrane that protects and confines the heart. The outermost layer, closest to the pericardium, is the epicardium. The pericardial cavity separates the pericardium from the epicardium. Beneath the epicardium is the myocardium, the middle layer, and the endocardium, the innermost layer. There are four chambers of the heart: the right atrium, the right ventricle, the left atrium, and the left ventricle.

Summary

Plastic surgery journal editors frequently publish original articles in their own journals. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) and the Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery showed higher editor authorship rates than other reviewed journals.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Academic Publishing
  • Medical Journals

Background:

  • Editor authorship in medical journals is a known phenomenon.
  • No prior studies have specifically analyzed this practice in plastic surgery journals.
  • This research addresses that gap by examining editorial publication habits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the extent of original article publication by editors within plastic surgery journals.
  • To identify specific journals with notable editor authorship rates.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 12 PubMed-indexed plastic surgery journals from 2014-2021.
  • Identified and quantified articles authored by journal editors.
  • Excluded editorials and supplement articles from the analysis.

Main Results:

  • Editor authorship proportions varied across journals, ranging from 0% to 5.88%.
  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) and the Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery demonstrated significantly higher editor authorship proportions compared to other journals.
  • The majority of studied journals featured original articles published by their editors.

Conclusions:

  • Plastic surgery journal editors commonly publish original research in their own publications.
  • Two specific journals, PRS and the Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery, exhibit higher rates of editor article publication.
  • Findings highlight a trend of editorial self-publication within the plastic surgery academic community.
