Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

11.8K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

81
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Social Loafing01:37

Social Loafing

34.3K
Another way in which a group presence can affect performance is social loafing—the exertion of less effort by a person working together with a group. Social loafing occurs when our individual performance cannot be evaluated separately from the group. Thus, group performance declines on easy tasks (Karau & Williams, 1993). Essentially individual group members loaf and let other group members pick up the slack. Because each individual’s efforts cannot be evaluated,...

Exercise and Cardiovascular Response01:20

Exercise and Cardiovascular Response

640
Exercise significantly impacts cardiovascular response, which is crucial for understanding patient health and designing effective treatment plans.
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...

Lifestyle Factors and Health01:20

Lifestyle Factors and Health

19
Lifestyle factors play a critical role in maintaining overall health and preventing chronic diseases. Key elements, such as regular physical activity, a nutritious diet, and abstinence from smoking, can significantly enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being while reducing the risk of several life-threatening conditions.
Benefits of Physical Activity
Physical activity, whether through structured exercise or casual activities like walking, biking, or dancing, is a cornerstone of a...

Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

11.1K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Summary

Personal values like security and achievement significantly influence adolescent exercise habits. These values impact motivation and intentions, driving leisure-time physical activity in young adults.

Area of Science:

  • Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Adolescent Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Understanding adolescent exercise motivation is crucial for public health.
  • Schwartz's personal values model and self-determination theory provide frameworks for examining exercise behavior.
  • Previous research has explored factors influencing physical activity, but the interplay of personal values and motivational mechanisms requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of personal values on leisure-time exercise behavior among adolescents.
  • To examine the mediating roles of identified regulation, introjected regulation, intrinsic motivation, and exercise intention.
  • To explore the moderating effect of emotional social support on the relationship between personal values and exercise motivation.

Main Methods:

  • Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze data from 522 Chinese adolescents (193 Females, 329 Males; mean age = 19.32).
  • The study assessed personal values, motivational regulations, exercise intention, and social support.
  • Statistical analyses examined mediating and moderating effects within the proposed theoretical framework.

Main Results:

  • Security-personal values positively predicted leisure-time exercise, mediated by identified regulation and exercise intention.
  • Achievement values predicted leisure-time exercise, with introjected regulation and exercise intention acting as mediators. Emotional social support moderated the link between achievement and introjected motivation.
  • Hedonism values predicted leisure-time exercise, mediated by intrinsic motivation and exercise intention. Conformity-interpersonal values showed no significant relationship with exercise behavior.

Conclusions:

  • Personal values, particularly security and achievement, are significant predictors of adolescent leisure-time exercise.
  • Motivational pathways, including identified regulation, introjected regulation, intrinsic motivation, and exercise intention, play crucial mediating roles.
  • Emotional social support can enhance the influence of achievement values on exercise motivation, highlighting the importance of social factors in promoting adolescent physical activity.
