    Background:

    • Barium enema examinations are diagnostic procedures used to visualize the colon.
    • Previous studies have suggested a potential association between barium enemas and bacteremia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between barium enema examinations and the occurrence of bacteremia.

    Main Methods:

    • Blood samples were collected from 42 patients before and at 5, 10, and 20 minutes after barium enema administration.
    • Patients with fever, inflammatory bowel disease symptoms, or recent antibiotic use were excluded.
    • Blood cultures were performed using the pour-plate method to detect enteric organisms.

    Main Results:

    • No cases of bacteremia due to enteric organisms were detected in any of the 42 patients studied.
    • The findings contradict previous reports suggesting a link between barium enemas and bacteremia.

    Conclusions:

    • Barium enema examinations, under the study conditions, did not appear to cause bacteremia.
    • Further research may be needed to fully understand the relationship between gastrointestinal procedures and bloodstream infections.
