The article debates the issue analysing the concept of avoidable pressure sore, discussing the interpretation of incidence and prevalence data. In order to consider pressure sores as a nursing care-sensitive outcome, it is necessary to distinguish the type of injury (due to positioning, devices…) and above all the care received, and to consider the concept of avoidability in the interpretation of data. If the nurses have been enabled to (and this depends also on the sufficient number of staff), and did not activate the due care interventions, the occurrence of a pressure sore can be considered a care-sensitive outcome. Otherwise, it is an outcome that the overall organisation should question itself about.
