Objective:
To develop an asynchronous online training on using motivational interviewing (MI) to address vaccine hesitancy in occupational health settings and evaluate learner performance.
Methods:
We developed a 2-hour online course featuring interactive exercises and simulated dialogue scenarios about vaccine hesitancy and recruited US-based occupational health clinicians (OHCs) via Listservs. We measured MI knowledge, confidence, and skills at baseline, posttraining, and 3 months later, using an instrument adapted from existing validated tools.
Results:
Of 71 OHC enrollees, 62 started the training, and 55 completed all evaluation questionnaires. Learners demonstrated significant increases in overall evaluation score (11.4% increase, 95% confidence interval, 9.9% to 13.8%) and domain-specific scores. Learners rated the training highly on acceptability measures.
Conclusions:
This brief asynchronous online training on using MI to address vaccine hesitancy was effective in improving OHC MI knowledge, skills, and confidence.
