Techniques of therapeutic communication I: Active Listening, Sharing Observations, Validation, and Using Touch01:15

Techniques of therapeutic communication I: Active Listening, Sharing Observations, Validation, and Using Touch

4.6K
The history of therapeutic communication can be traced back to Florence Nightingale, who emphasized the importance of developing trusting relationships with patients. She taught that the presence of nurses with patients results in therapeutic healing.
Therapeutic communication is not the same as social interaction. Social interaction has no goal or purpose and consists of casual information sharing, whereas therapeutic communication has a plan or purpose for the conversation. Therapeutic...

Techniques of Therapeutic Communication II: Focusing, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

7.6K
Focusing involves centering a conversation on a message's critical elements or concepts. Focusing is valuable if the talk is vague or patients begin to repeat themselves. Sometimes, when patients are asked about their symptoms, they may go off-topic and try to tell their entire life story. Respectfully, the nurse should bring the conversation back into focus.
This therapeutic technique can also be used when a patient brings up pertinent information during a health-related conversation. The...

Psychotherapy01:28

Psychotherapy

54
Psychotherapy is a versatile, nonmedical approach aimed at helping individuals address emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal issues to enhance their overall well-being. It can involve one-on-one sessions, couples counseling, or small group discussions with a therapist. The therapeutic process includes various techniques such as open discussion, interpretation of thoughts and behaviors, active listening, positive reinforcement, and role modeling. Psychotherapy aims to support individuals in...

Elements Crucial for Effective Psychotherapy01:25

Elements Crucial for Effective Psychotherapy

25
Research has highlighted several critical factors that influence the effectiveness of psychotherapy, such as the therapeutic alliance, the therapist, and the client.
The Therapeutic Alliance
The therapeutic alliance refers to the relationship between the therapist and the client. The alliance strengthens when the therapist and the client engage in a nurturing, supportive, trusting, empathetic, and respectful relationship, improving therapeutic outcomes. Therapists must monitor this relationship...

Psychodynamic Therapy01:29

Psychodynamic Therapy

43
Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

37
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology and Mental Health Technology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Human-Computer Interaction

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the use of videoconferencing platforms for psychotherapy.
  • Therapists have expressed hesitation towards videoconferencing psychotherapy (VCP) due to perceived difficulties in maintaining control.
  • Previous research identified potential features to enhance therapist control in VCP sessions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if technical features improve clinicians' control during video therapy sessions.
  • To understand the technical and relational aspects of video's role in therapists' VCP experience.
  • To explore the impact of specific features on therapist control and therapeutic relationships.

Main Methods:

  • Survey distributed to 121 mental health professionals, with 86 providing complete data.
  • Exploratory Factor Analysis to identify key factors from collected data.
  • Path analysis used to examine relationships between identified factors, controlling for expertise and experience.

Main Results:

  • Three factors were identified: 'challenges in providing VCP,' 'features to enhance the therapeutic relationship,' and 'enhancing control.'
  • Implementing features significantly reduced therapists' challenges and enhanced their control over VCP sessions.
  • A significant positive relationship was found between features enhancing the therapeutic relationship and enhanced control, with features to enhance TR being key (effect size=0.25).

Conclusions:

  • Technology, through specific features, can significantly improve therapists' VCP experience by increasing their sense of control.
  • Enhanced therapist control facilitates effective patient service and successful therapy outcomes in VCP.
  • The study supports general system theory, viewing video as an active agent influencing the therapeutic process.
