    Summary

Administering mezlocillin before emergency cesarean sections significantly reduced postoperative complications. This antibiotic prophylaxis led to fewer infections and shorter hospital stays for patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Emergency cesarean sections carry a risk of postoperative infections and complications.
    • Antibiotic prophylaxis is crucial in surgical procedures to prevent surgical site infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of mezlocillin as a prophylactic antibiotic in patients undergoing emergency cesarean sections.
    • To assess the impact of mezlocillin on postoperative morbidity and infection rates.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted.
    • Patients received a single 5-gm intravenous dose of mezlocillin or a placebo 30 minutes before surgery.
    • Postoperative outcomes, including infection rates and hospital stay, were monitored.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Postoperative morbidity was significantly lower in the mezlocillin group (18.4%) compared to the placebo group (62.5%) (P < 0.001).
    • Incidences of febrile morbidity, endometritis, and urinary tract infections were substantially reduced with mezlocillin.
    • Patients receiving mezlocillin experienced shorter hospital stays and no serious infections.

    Conclusions:

    • Mezlocillin is an effective prophylactic antibiotic for emergency cesarean sections.
    • Antibiotic prophylaxis with mezlocillin significantly decreases postoperative complications and improves patient outcomes.
    • The use of mezlocillin can lead to reduced healthcare resource utilization through shorter hospital stays.
