PET/CT Case Series: Unmasking the Mystery of Cardiac Sarcoidosis
1Department of Radiology, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa diane-soulek@uiowa.edu.
Insights
Early recognition and prompt intervention are crucial for managing cardiac sarcoidosis, a rare but serious inflammatory heart condition. This case series highlights imaging techniques and patient preparation for improved outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Nuclear Medicine
- Inflammatory Diseases
Background:
- Cardiac sarcoidosis, though rare, has an increasing incidence due to heightened awareness and earlier detection.
- High mortality rates necessitate rapid diagnosis and treatment to prevent major adverse cardiac events.
Observation:
- This case series explores characteristic features of cardiac sarcoidosis on PET/CT scans.
- It reviews the utility of advanced imaging modalities in monitoring treatment efficacy.
- The critical role of dietary modifications for 18F-FDG imaging and consequences of non-adherence are examined.
Findings:
- PET/CT imaging reveals specific features of cardiac sarcoidosis.
- Advanced imaging aids in assessing treatment response.
- Patient preparation, including dietary changes, is vital for accurate 18F-FDG uptake in cardiac imaging.
Implications:
- Improved diagnostic strategies and treatment monitoring for cardiac sarcoidosis are essential.
- Standardized patient preparation protocols for 18F-FDG PET/CT are crucial for reliable imaging.
- Understanding the patient journey can inform clinical management and patient support.
Abstract:
The annual incidence of cardiac sarcoidosis is low, but increased awareness of this inflammatory condition has led to earlier disease recognition. High mortality rates compel prompt diagnosis and intervention to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiac events. This cardiac sarcoid PET/CT case series provides information on cardiac sarcoid features, reviews advanced imaging and its role in treatment monitoring, examines the importance of dietary modifications required for 18F-FDG cardiac sarcoid imaging and the associated consequences of noncompliant patient preparation, and provides an in-depth review of a patient's cardiac sarcoid journey.
