Acupuncture effectively reduced cellulitis severity and pain in hospitalized patients. This pilot study suggests acupuncture as a beneficial adjunctive therapy for skin infections, warranting further large-scale trials.

Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Dermatology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Acute skin infections like cellulitis are common but can have slow inflammatory resolution, leading to prolonged pain and reduced mobility.
  • Acupuncture has shown potential in managing inflammatory skin conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment for cellulitis in hospitalized patients.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot randomized sham-controlled trial was conducted with hospitalized cellulitis patients receiving standard care plus either acupuncture or sham acupuncture.
  • The primary outcome measured was the improvement in cellulitis score at day 4.
  • Secondary outcomes included pain assessment and inflammatory markers.

  • Acupuncture significantly improved cellulitis scores (4.1 vs. 7.9, P=0.003) and reduced pain intensity (3.8 vs. 6.3, P=0.023) by day 4 compared to sham acupuncture.
  • While leukocyte changes showed no difference, C-reactive protein levels significantly decreased in the acupuncture group (27.0 vs. 63.9 mg/L, P=0.025).

Conclusions:

  • Acupuncture demonstrated efficacy as an adjunctive therapy for leg cellulitis in this pilot study.
  • Further large-scale research is necessary to confirm the effectiveness of acupuncture for skin infections.
