Summary

Transvaginal radiofrequency ablation effectively improved overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms, including urgency incontinence and frequency. This minimally invasive treatment demonstrated significant efficacy and safety in female patients with OAB.

Background:

  • Autonomic nerves below the proximal urethra and trigone influence bladder function.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) energy shows potential for ablating/modulating these nerves in overactive bladder (OAB) patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and efficacy of transvaginal RF energy delivery using a microneedling device for OAB treatment.
  • To evaluate improvements in OAB symptoms and quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • Female patients with OAB underwent transvaginal detrusor nerve RF ablation to a depth of 7 mm.
  • Outcomes included changes in incontinence episodes, urinary frequency, and validated quality-of-life questionnaires (IIQ-7, UDI-6, PPBC).
  • Safety was monitored via pain assessment and adverse event reporting.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant improvements were observed in urgency incontinence episodes, urinary frequency, and quality-of-life scores (IIQ-7, UDI-6, PPBC) at 3 months.
  • No adverse events were reported during the study period.
  • Significant ANOVA testing (P < 0.001) confirmed the efficacy of the treatment.

Conclusions:
