Summary

Pediatric injuries from utility-terrain vehicles (UTVs) are more severe than from all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), causing more amputations and reconstructive surgeries. UTV accidents result in devastating upper-extremity traumas for young riders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the severity of pediatric upper-extremity (UE) traumas resulting from all-terrain vehicle (ATV) versus utility-terrain vehicle (UTV) accidents.
  • To investigate differences in injury mutilation, amputation rates, surgical interventions, and hospital/ICU admissions between ATV and UTV incidents.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of pediatric UE injury cases associated with ATV or UTV use from 2010-2021 at a trauma center.
  • Analysis of 42 patient cases from 5 states, comparing injury outcomes based on vehicle type using statistical tests.
