Summary

Black Smoke (BS) measurements are a cost-effective proxy for Elemental Carbon (EC) when direct EC monitoring is unavailable. However, the ISO-9835 protocol is flawed; using the EU-manual for BS determination and converting to EC is recommended for accurate air quality monitoring.
