Uterovaginal Anomalies in Pediatric Patients

Uterovaginal anomalies are relatively common congenital disorders whose diagnosis at a young age is important but often difficult. For proper management, the physician requires a thorough understanding of normal embryology and sexual differentiation.

This report provide an overview of the various abnormalities encountered and guide the clinician by providing an approach to management.

Our series is a retrospective of 14 adolescents with uterovaginal malformations. This review discusses the current diagnosis, management, and outcomes of their uterovaginal anomalies.

Of the 14 patients, 7 had an imperforate hymen, 2 patients had a Transverse vaginal septum, 2 patients had a didelphys uterus with blind hemivagina, 3 patients had a high vaginal atresia.

Genital malformations can be particularly disturbing to the patient and her family because they not only have reproductive implications but also significant psychological and sexual overtones that need to be addressed and dealt with in a sensitive and reassuring manner.
