Acetabular wear in Charnley's polyethylene prosthesis

During the last 13 years, 747 Charnley total prostheses were carried out. These cases have been critically reviewed in relation to the phenomenon of wear of the acetabular polyethylene. The possibility and limitations of measuring this radiographically are considered. The statistical data obtained is discussed and the acetabular wear is evaluated in relation to the length of time since the prosthesis was inserted.
