Human Genetics

485
Human genetics provides a profound framework for understanding the interplay between genetic predispositions and human psychology. At the heart of this discipline lies the study of how genes influence physical traits, behaviors, and susceptibility to diseases. Each person carries a unique genetic code that subtly or significantly shapes their psychological and behavioral landscape.
The complex relationship between genetics and psychology is observable through common biological components such...

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

38
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Randomized Experiments

6.6K
The randomization process involves assigning study participants randomly to experimental or control groups based on their probability of being equally assigned. Randomization is meant to eliminate selection bias and balance known and unknown confounding factors so that the control group is similar to the treatment group as much as possible. A computer program and a random number generator can be used to assign participants to groups in a way that minimizes bias.

Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

20
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...

Regression Toward the Mean01:52

Regression Toward the Mean

6.3K
Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Psychiatry
  • Genetics
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Observational studies suggest an association between rosacea and psychiatric disorders.
  • The underlying causal relationship remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the bidirectional causal association between rosacea and major depression disorder (MDD), anxiety disorder (AD), and panic disorder (PD).

Main Methods:

  • A bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed using publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data.
  • The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was the primary analysis, complemented by MR-Egger, MR-PRESSO, Cochran's Q, and leave-one-out analyses for sensitivity and robustness.
  • Validation analysis using independent datasets supported the findings.

Main Results:

  • Forward MR analysis indicated no causal association between genetically predicted rosacea and the three psychiatric disorders.
  • Reverse MR analysis also showed no significant causal effects of MDD, AD, or PD on rosacea.
  • Sensitivity and validation analyses confirmed the robustness and consistency of these null findings, with no evidence of horizontal pleiotropy or outliers.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides no evidence for a bidirectional causal relationship between genetically predicted rosacea and major depression disorder, anxiety disorder, or panic disorder.
  • The findings contrast with observational data, suggesting that the observed associations may not be causal.
  • Further research is needed to explore potential complex causal pathways or other contributing factors.
