Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

1.9K
Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Guidelines for Writing Outcome01:11

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

2.6K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Psychosurgery

28
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.

SBAR II: Application of SBAR

4.2K
SBAR is an effective communication tool used by healthcare professionals to communicate patient information accurately. SBAR stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. For a better understanding, an example is given below.
SBAR Report from a Nurse to a Health Care Provider

Ethical Dilemmas II01:30

Ethical Dilemmas II

857
Resolving an ethical dilemma in healthcare involves a systematic approach that considers every aspect of the issue, respecting both the patient's needs and values and the healthcare professional's ethical obligations. Here are potential steps to resolve an ethical dilemma:

Ethical Issues01:27

Ethical Issues

824
Nurses are essential in patient care, upholding the ethical principles of their profession and effectively navigating ethical dilemmas. Neglecting ethical issues can lead to inadequate patient care, compromised therapeutic relationships, and moral distress among healthcare workers.

Summary

Shared decision-making (SDM) can be measured in surgical care. The CollaboRATE tool reliably distinguishes patient-centered care quality at the hospital and surgeon levels, with feasible sample sizes for implementation.

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Quality
  • Surgical Care
  • Patient-Reported Outcomes

Background:

  • Shared decision-making (SDM) is crucial in surgical care but lacks patient-perspective performance measures.
  • Evaluating SDM quality from patient viewpoints is essential for improving care standards.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if SDM levels can be differentiated among hospitals and surgeons.
  • To determine the feasibility of implementing SDM as a performance measure by estimating required sample sizes for statistical reliability.

Main Methods:

  • Two patient-reported SDM measures, CollaboRATE and SDM-Q-9, were used.
  • 24 candidate performance measures were developed for hospital and surgeon levels.
  • Mixed models analyzed statistical reliability and projected minimum sample sizes, exploring risk adjustment and nonresponse bias.

Main Results:

  • CollaboRATE demonstrated higher reliability (0.81 median) for hospitals, requiring 192-235 responses.
  • CollaboRATE also showed higher reliability (0.49 median) for surgeons, needing only 46 responses.
  • Performance differences in SDM were distinguishable at both hospital and surgeon levels.

Conclusions:

  • CollaboRATE reliably distinguishes patient-centered care quality at hospital and surgeon levels.
  • Implementing CollaboRATE as a surgeon-specific performance measure is feasible due to low response number requirements.
  • This study supports the use of patient-reported measures for evaluating SDM in surgical settings.
