Clinical Research Informatics (CRI)

Background:

Clinical Research Informatics (CRI) has matured significantly over the last decade, transforming clinical research practices.
Growing interest in CRI is evidenced by a substantial and expanding body of scientific literature.
The field has seen advancements in tools and methods, bridging the gap between principles and practice.

Purpose of the Study:

To provide an overview of the evolving definition and scope of Clinical Research Informatics (CRI) over the past 10 years.
To highlight major contributions to the field of CRI during the past decade.
To offer insights into recent CRI research trends and future perspectives.

Main Methods:

A modified thematic review approach was employed to analyze the evolution and current status of CRI.
Literature sources were identified through complementary review processes, including AMIA CRI year-in-review and IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics.
The review focused on publications from the past decade.

Main Results:

Over 1,500 publications were considered, with 205 included in the final review.
Key publications defining CRI's scope and evolution were identified, showcasing impactful tools and methods.
Current topics of interest and prevailing research trends in CRI were revealed.

Conclusions:

The review demonstrates a decade of progress in CRI, with significant discoveries and impactful methods bridging principles to practice.
Mature CRI solutions and large-scale research projects highlight the field's advancement.
Ongoing CRI development is needed, particularly in rigorous evaluation and formalization of services and capabilities.
