AMR battle in Pakistan: from national action plans to local failures
1Department of Pharmacy Practice, Faculty of Pharmacy, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, 60800, Pakistan. xikria@gmail.com.
Abstract:
This correspondence highlights critical gaps in Pakistan's response to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) five years after implementing the National Action Plan. Despite extensive policy discussions, workshops, and official reports, meaningful actions remain insufficient. Key issues include a lack of awareness among healthcare professionals about resistance patterns, inadequate surveillance, poor infection prevention and control practices, and a pharmaceutical industry focused more on producing branded generics than innovating new antibiotics. The correspondence calls for urgent action to bridge the gap between policy and practice, emphasizing the need for comprehensive awareness, better surveillance, and stronger regulatory enforcement to contain AMR effectively in Pakistan.
Insights
Pakistan
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Infectious Disease Management
- Pharmaceutical Policy
Background:
- Five years after implementing its National Action Plan, Pakistan faces significant challenges in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
- Policy initiatives have not translated into sufficient on-ground actions to curb AMR.
- Key stakeholders, including healthcare professionals and the pharmaceutical industry, require targeted interventions.
Discussion:
- A critical gap exists between policy formulation and practical implementation of AMR control strategies in Pakistan.
- Insufficient awareness of resistance patterns among healthcare professionals hinders effective treatment.
- Weaknesses in surveillance systems and infection prevention and control (IPC) practices exacerbate the AMR crisis.
Key Insights:
- Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Pakistan is critically under-addressed due to policy-practice gaps.
- Lack of professional awareness, inadequate surveillance, and poor IPC practices are major drivers of AMR.
- The pharmaceutical sector's focus on branded generics over antibiotic innovation impedes AMR containment.
Outlook:
- Urgent, comprehensive strategies are needed to bridge the policy-practice divide in Pakistan's AMR response.
- Enhanced surveillance, robust infection prevention and control, and improved professional education are crucial.
- Stronger regulatory oversight and incentives for antibiotic innovation are essential for long-term AMR containment.
