Background:

Intimate partner homicide (IPH) accounts for a significant portion of global homicides.
Research on IPH perpetrators often overlooks their interactions with law enforcement and diverse criminal histories.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the criminal trajectories of intimate partner homicide (IPH) perpetrators.
To identify distinct profiles of IPH perpetrators based on their criminal histories.
To assess the external validity and implications of these profiles for the justice system.

Main Methods:

Latent profile analysis was used to categorize 1,780 individuals involved in attempted or completed IPH.
Data were sourced from Quebec's official criminal events database.
Criminal career, contextual, and situational variables were used to assess profile validity.

Main Results:

Five distinct profiles of IPH perpetrators were identified: one-time, low-volume intimate partner violence (IPV), moderate-volume IPV, high-volume violence, and high-volume polymorphous perpetrators.
These profiles demonstrated varying criminal career patterns and external validity.

Conclusions:

IPH perpetrators do not follow a single criminal pathway, exhibiting diverse patterns.
Understanding these distinct profiles is crucial for developing targeted interventions and improving justice system practices in addressing intimate partner violence.
