[Extraction of foreign bodies in cases with complications]

Analysis of surgical treatment of 186 patients with intraocular foreign bodies and concomitant complications such as cataract, opacity of the vitreous body, hemophthalmos, and endo-ophthalmitis. The authors employed a variety of surgical procedures to remove foreign bodies, with opticoconstructive operations such as phacoemulsification, lensectomy, and vitrectomy. Reliable data were obtained conforming the efficacy of these operations. A total of 178 foreign bodies were removed; 2 could not be extracted. Six foreign bodies were left in situ, since removal was contraindicated. In the majority of the patients visual acuity improved. The authors have developed a system of interventions for various combinations of intraocular changes and foreign bodies.
