Background:

  • The 21-gene Breast Recurrence Score® (Oncotype DX®) assay is an established tool for guiding chemotherapy decisions in early breast cancer.
  • While used internationally for lymph node-positive disease, its reimbursement in Ireland was limited at the study's commencement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of Recurrence Score® testing accessibility on chemotherapy utilization.
  • To quantify changes in oncologists' treatment recommendations following Recurrence Score® test results.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 75 patients with ER+, HER2- breast cancer and 1-3 positive lymph nodes was conducted across ten Irish hospitals.
  • Oncologists completed pre- and post-testing questionnaires assessing chemotherapy recommendations and treatment plans.
  • Data collection occurred between March and September 2017.

Main Results:

  • Recurrence Score® testing led to a 27% reduction in chemotherapy recommendations, decreasing from 92% to 65% of patients.
  • Significant reductions were observed in patients with one (26% decrease) and two (46% decrease) involved lymph nodes.

  • The Recurrence Score® has since become a standard of care in Ireland for relevant breast cancer cases.
