    Summary

Complete broncho-ruptures are often missed, especially in young patients. Early diagnosis and surgical repair are crucial for better lung function outcomes.

    Area of Science:

    • Thoracic Surgery
    • Pulmonary Medicine
    • Trauma Care

    Background:

    • Broncho-ruptures, or bronchial ruptures, are severe airway injuries.
    • Diagnosis is frequently delayed, leading to poorer patient outcomes.
    • Younger patients with elastic thoraxes are more susceptible than older patients with rigid thoraxes.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of complete broncho-ruptures are presented.
    • Immediate surgical repair (reanastomosis) showed minimal impact on lung function in these cases.
    • Lung function parameters were noted to be at the lower end of the standard range.

    Findings:

    • Bronchial rupture is underdiagnosed, with up to 75% of cases missed.
    • Delayed diagnosis and treatment can lead to irreversible functional deficits.
    • Emergency bronchoscopy is feasible even in severely injured patients.

    Implications:

    • Increased vigilance and earlier indication for bronchoscopy are needed for timely diagnosis.
    • Prompt surgical intervention is essential to mitigate long-term pulmonary complications.
    • Advances in surgical techniques allow for effective management even in complex trauma cases.
