Higher order dispersion-managed solitons for the capacity enhancement of fiber optic communication systems

We examine a coherent communication system utilizing signaling based on fundamental dispersion-managed (DM) solitons and anti-phase bi-solitons (also known as anti-symmetric DM solitons) to enhance channel capacity. Analytical expressions for the phase change due to intra-channel cross-phase modulation (XPM) are derived, revealing stronger phase degradation when two consecutive bi-solitons appear in the data stream compared to other symbol combinations. In the absence of a general analytical formula for anti-phase bi-solitons, we approximate them using the first-order Gauss-Hermite function and discuss the conditions under which this approximation is valid. Additionally, we demonstrate that a simple matched-filter receiver for our soliton-based signaling outperforms a quasi-linear system with raised cosine signaling equipped with linear dispersion compensation.
