Obedience01:08

Obedience

According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation, obedience...

International Nursing Organizations II

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations based in Geneva. The WHO has many initiatives that center around health. Primarily, they lead global efforts to expand universal health coverage using science-based policies and programs. They are also responsible for shaping health research agendas and developing norms and standards.
The WHO provides expert team support, including funding, vaccines, testing, and treatment tools at the country level to fight...
Guidelines For Measuring Vital Signs01:19

Guidelines For Measuring Vital Signs

Following these guidelines can help nurses accurately measure vital signs, assess changes in patient conditions, and provide timely treatment when necessary. Adhering closely to the guidelines ensures the accuracy and reliability of the results.
Before taking a patient's vital signs, a nurse would consider and assess the patient's comfort level and ensure appropriate equipment is available.
Nursing Assessment01:29

Nursing Assessment

The two sources for collecting information are primary and secondary. After gathering information, interpretation and validation help to complete the data. The purpose of assessment is to establish data with the initial information, to interpret data about the patient's perceived needs and health problems, and to respond to these problems identified.
The nurse collects all aspects of the patient's health in the initial assessment, establishing priorities for ongoing focused assessments and...
Data Validation01:03

Data Validation

Data validation is an essential part of a comprehensive assessment. Validation is confirming or verifying and opening the door to gathering more assessment data as it clarifies vague or unclear data. The process of checking and verifying the collected information is called data validation. The primary purpose of data validation is to ensure data is as free from error, bias, and misinterpretation as possible.
Nursing assessment guides are generally based on holistic models rather than medical...
Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.
Section...

Summary

A new scale, the Chinese Nursing Work Environment Scale for Public Health Emergencies (C-NWE-PHE), was developed to assess nurses' work environments during public health emergencies. This validated tool aids in understanding and improving conditions for nurses in crisis situations.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing
  • Public Health
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Limited research exists on nursing work environments specifically during public health emergencies (PHEs).
  • Existing instruments do not adequately capture the unique challenges nurses face in PHEs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Chinese Nursing Work Environment Scale for Public Health Emergencies (C-NWE-PHE).
  • To provide a reliable tool for assessing nurses' perceived work environment during PHEs.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional psychometric evaluation design was employed.
  • The Chinese Nursing Work Environment Scale for Public Health Emergencies (C-NWE-PHE) was developed and administered to 1156 nurses via online surveys.
  • Confirmatory factor analysis, correlation, and Cronbach's alpha analyses were used to assess psychometric properties.

Main Results:

  • The C-NWE-PHE scale consists of 28 items across five subscales: Workforce and Deployment Support, Leadership and Emergency Management, Autonomy and Empowerment, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Logistics and Humanistic Care.
  • Structural equation modeling confirmed construct validity with satisfactory factor loadings and good model fit.
  • The scale demonstrated confirmed content validity and reliability.

Conclusions:

  • The C-NWE-PHE is a psychometrically sound scale for evaluating nursing work environments during PHEs.
  • The scale's five constructs offer insights into working conditions during emergencies.
  • Implementation can inform targeted improvements, support nurse retention, and enhance emergency response effectiveness.
